March 26 - The Power Source

“I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources The Father will give you mighty inner strength through His Holy Spirit.” EPHESIANS 3:16

Promised Help
** JIM CYMBALA “We Christians seldom admit that we don’t know how to pray. Many of us have been taught since childhood how to put sentences together that sound like a prayer, to the point that we are pros at it. Some can turn out an eloquent presentation to God at a moment’s notice. Prayer born of the Spirit, is another dimension of calling on god to the point of having the Holy Spirit supernaturally assist us. This is not a worked-up emotionalism, but a powerful promise of help from God himself.”
** Isaiah 44:3-4 “For I will give you abundant water to quench your thirst and to moisten your parched fields. And I will pour out my Spirit and my blessings on your children. They will thrive like watered grass, like willows on a river bank.”
** Luke 11:13 “If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.”

Passion for the Holy Spirit’s Help
** D.L. MOODY “God has a good many children who have just barely got life but no power for service. The Holy Spirit coming upon them with power is distinct and separate from conversion. I believe we should accomplish more in one week than we should in years if we had only the His fresh baptism. A great many think because they have been filled once, they are going to be full for all time after; but O my friends, we are leaky vessels and have to be kept right under the fountain all the time in order to keep full. Let us keep near Him.”
** Jeremiah 29:13 “If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me.”
** Hebrews 11:6 “Anyone who wants to come to the Father must believe that there is a God and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

John Parran's TESTIMONY

March 19 - God gives power for His church

"The church then had peace… and it grew in strength and numbers. The believers were walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:31

Jon Cosgrove’s STORY

“God nowhere asks anyone to have a large church. He only calls us to do His work, proclaiming His Word to people He loves under the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit to produce results that only He can bring about. The glory then goes to Him alone—not to any denomination, local church, local pastor, or church-growth consultant. That is God’s only plan.” JIM CYMBALA

GOD GIVES POWER FOR HIS CHURCH SO THAT WE CAN SPEAK BOLDLY
** Acts 4
** “I long more and more to be filled with the Spirit, and to see my congregation moved and melted under the Word, as in great revival times, `the place shaken where they are assembled together,’ because the Lord has come in power” ANDREW BONAR

GOD GIVES POWER FOR HIS CHURCH TO TEACH US TO RELY ON HIM TO COME THROUGH
** Matthew 7:7-8 “Keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks.”
** “The work of God is not by might of men or by the power of men but by His Spirit. It is by Him the truth convicts and converts, sanctifies and saves. The philosophies of men fail, but the Word of god in the demonstration of the Spirit prevails.” SAMUEL CHADWICK
** Zechariah 4:6 “It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.”

GOD GIVES POWER FOR HIS CHURCH WHEN WE WAIT ON HIS WILL
** “The church that multiplies committees and neglects prayer may be fussy, noisy, enterprising, but it labors in vain and spends its strength for naught. It is possible to excel in mechanics and fail in dynamics. There is an abundance of machinery; what is wanting is power.” SAMUEL CHADWICK
** 1Corinthians 2:3-5 “I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. And my message and my preaching were very plain. I did not use wise and persuasive speeches, but the Holy Spirit was powerful among you. I did this so that you might trust the power of God rather than human wisdom.”
** Isaiah 61:1-2 “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the poor. The Spirit sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to announce that captive will be released and prisoners will be freed. The Spirit sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come…”

March 12 - God's power turns defeat into victory

“So I pray that God, who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in Him. May you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Corrie Water’s Story

WHEN WE LET GO…
l Matthew 10:39 “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give it up for me (Jesus), you will find it.”
l The Holy Spirit has a way of short-circuiting human problems. Indeed, in exactly the same way as Jesus Christ in the flesh cut right through the matted layers of tradition and exposed the real issue; so we find the Spirit of Jesus dealing not so much with problems as with people. Since God’s Holy Spirit cannot conceivably have changed one iota through the centuries. He is perfectly prepared to short-circuit, by an inflow of love, wisdom and understanding, many human problems today. JB PHILLIPS

WHEN WE CRY OUT…
l Psalm 40 ~ Read entire chapter.WHEN WE MAKE ROOM…
l 1John 4:4 “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won your fight… because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.”
l Without the Spirit of God we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind or chariots without horses. Like branches without sap, we are withered. Like coals without fire, we are useless. CHARLES SPURGEON

MARCH 5 - God's Power Changes Lives

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come.”2 Corinthians 5:17

Jeff Martin’s TESTIMONY

When we are Available
l“Every time we say, `I believe in the Holy Spirit,’ we mean we believe there is a living God able and willing, to enter human personality and change it.” J.B. PHILIPS
l 2 Peter 1:3-4 “As we know Jesus better, his divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life. He has called us to receive his own glory and goodness! And by that same mighty power, he has given us all of his rich and wonderful promises. He has promised that you will escape the decadence all around you caused by evil desire and that you will share in his divine nature.”

By turning Despair to Joy
l Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in Spirit.”
l “I believe and am growing more into this belief that divine, miraculous, creative power resides in the Holy Spirit. If we look to the Spirit of God and expect it to come from Him and Him alone, then we shall honor the Spirit and the Spirit will do His work. I cannot help but believe there are many Christians who want to be more efficient in the Lord’s service. It is from the Holy Spirit that we may expect this power.” D.L. MOODY

By Supernaturally Empowering Us
l Acts 2
l “When God moves into our lives, no obstacle can stop Him.” JIM CYMBALA
l Romans 8:6 “If your flesh controls your mind, there are death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace.”
l Daily living for God only happens through the powerful difference of the Holy Spirit.
l 2 Corinthians 3:18 “And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more.”
l “Most people plot and plan themselves into mediocrity, while now and again somebody forgets themselves into greatness.” E. STANLY JONES
l The“Son of Sam” story in Cymbala’s book.

COMMITMENT DAY AT "The Orchard Church"

Our final value in the Orchard is that of valuing those who commit to "developing" the community. We feel that someone "develops" the community through (1)building up, (2)supporting and (3) serving. There at least 3 different levels of commitment to each of these. We ast that TODAY, if you are so moved by God's Spirit, you would decide to be a "Developer" of the OC and will fill out the following form with your name and then checking one box (or more) in each of the sections.

Beginning on ____________, 2006 ______________(name) has decided to be a developer of "The Orchard Church." So, I commit to the following:

I will BUILD UP (1John 4) the community by...

November 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 5:21-6:9

WHY SUBMIT?
Introduction
**Talk about “Bloodsport,” crying uncle, wrestling in the hole.
**We don’t like to give up! Think about comebacks in sports.

Submit in every aspect of your life.
**Wives submit to your husbands (5:22-24)
**Husbands submit to your wives (5:25-33)
**Children submit to your parents (6:1-3)
**Parents submit to your children (6:4)
**Employees submit to your employer (6:5-8)
**Employers submit to your employees (6:9)

Conclusion
**Don’t give in because they’re better than you. ILLUSTRATION: a dad letting his son beat him at basketball OR a mom letting her child win a board/card game.
**Don’t submit just because you love them either!
**“You will submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

October 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 4:17-5:20

WHY LIVE?
Introduction
**Reminds me of the old Ivory Soap commercials.
**What does it mean that something is 100% pure?
**I encourage just reading through this text in a modern translation like the New Living or The Message and let the text itself drive the points home.

Living as Children of Light 4:17-32
· Don’t live like the ungodly.
· Throw off your old life and life for Jesus.
· Become a new person.
· Don’t lie to each other and don’t get angry with each other.
· Use your hands for good things.
· Use your words for good things.
· Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.
· Get rid of hateful actions and speech, so that you think of others better than yourself.
Living in the Light 5:1-14
· Follow God’s example and love.
· Avoid impurity and stupid talk. Instead thank God.
· Don’t make excuses for sins, rather obey God.
· Avoid darkness and live in the light.
· Please God, avoid evil and expose it.
· Don’t even talk about deeds of darkness.
· Shine your light in dark places.
Living by the Spirit’s Power 5:15-20
· Not as fools, but as those who are wise.
· Make the most of opportunity for doing good.
· Act with the Lord’s purpose.
· Don’t get drunk!
· Let the Holy Spirit do HIS work in you.
· Make music to the Lord.
· Give thanks.
Conclusion
**Why live pure?
**Romans 2:7 ~ “He will give eternal life to those who persist in doing what is good, seeking after the glory and immortality that God offers. But He will pour out His anger and wrath on those who live for themselves.”

October 2006: The WHY in Ephesians ~ RYAN ADKINS Preaching

Ephesians 4:1-16

WHY ENCOURAGE?
Introduction
**RYAN’S INTRO???? –possible calling illustration?
**Hebrews 10:24-25 “Think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of His coming back again is drawing near.”

How do we encourage?
Be humble and gentle (vs2)
Be patient (vs2)
Through unity (vs3-6)
v United in the Holy Spirit
v Bound together with peace
v One body
v Same spirit
v Same future
v One Lord
v One faith
v One baptism
v One God and Father
Through servant leadership (vs11-13)
v Who are they?
v Equip
v Build up
v Unify
v Help them grow up

Conclusion
**We don’t want to answer how to encourage, but WHY ENCOURAGE? (vs1) “So, that we live a life worthy of our calling.”
**What does that life look like? When we encourage our life begins to look like (vs14-16)…
v No longer children (plus details).
v Hold to the truth.
v Become more like Jesus.
v Behave like the true body of Christ.

October 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 3:12-21 (also Hebrews 4)

WHY APPROACH?
Introduction
**Wizard of OZ: approach for courage, for a heart, for a brain, for a ride home.
**We don’t approach God as some wizard who will grant our every wish.
**Why do we approach the throne of God?
**Let’s look at what Paul did.

DON’T QUESTION…
We can come into His presence NO DOUBT about it!
**vs12 – we can come fearlessly into His presence
**Hebrews 4:16 – So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.

What do we do while we are there?
**Fall to your knees and pray (vs14)
**Receive
His welcome (vs 12)
His mercy (Hebrews 4:16)
Mighty inner strength through His Holy Spirit(vs16)
His marvelous love (vs17)
**Find
Grace to help us when we need it (H4:16)
Power to understand the largess of God (vs18)
**Filled up (vs19)

Conclusion
**We approach because of God’s power to answer our prayers and go even further than we could ever possibly imagine (vs20-21). His power to bestow amazing love, to rain down amazing grace, to bring blessings unimaginable… because there is no greater place to be!

If available, take sometime to worship God as a group and approach Him.

September 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 3:1-11 (or 13)

WHY PLAN BIG?
Introduction
**I love 80’s movies… or at least love to laugh at them!
**Rad, Breakin’, Side Out, One Crazy Summer, Bad News Bears, Revenge of the Nerds, Karate Kid… any others.

Paul’s Ministry
**Special ministry of announcing favor to the Gentiles (2)
**Revealed by the Holy Spirit (5)
**Both groups who believe are one body (6)
**He is privileged to serve (7)
**Though I am unworthy God chose me (8-9)
**God’s plan is carried out through Jesus (11)

Our Ministry in the 21st Century
**Announce God’s favor to our community.
**God has revealed to us by His Spirit and His Word that we are to be His “beautiful feet,” His servants, His heart today.
**We are privileged to serve the Father by spreading the Good News about Jesus!
**We feel that this announcing, this sharing, this spreading is best accomplished through relational ministry…

Conclusion
**The movies of the 1980’s taught that if you tried hard enough, no matter how insane or big the plan was, you and the people you love and work hard with could accomplish that big plan.
**EPHESIANS 3 teaches us something very similar, but very different. It teaches us that no matter how insane or big the plan that God lays out for us, with the HELP OF JESUS you and the people you love and work hard for the Lord with can accomplish HIS BIG PLANS.

August 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 2:11-22

WHY HUG?
Introduction
**One of my favorite “Friends” episodes was a montage episode when Joey and Chandler were fighting a lot. One of the montage pieces was of them hugging every time something good happened or something bad. Then, they looked at each other and said, “maybe we do this too much.” (clip is on “mac and cheese” episode)
**YOU CAN NEVER HUG TOO MUCH!
**Greetings, good-byes, sad times and good times.
Conflict in the Ephesian church between Jews and Gentiles.
**Jews proud of their circumcision (11-13)
**Gentiles brought near by Jesus’ blood
**Jesus ended the system of Jewish law (15)
**They became one body (14-16)
**Good news and Holy Spirit are for both groups (17-18)
**(19-22) So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with God’s holy people. You are members of God’s people. We are His house, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself. We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through Him you Gentiles are also joined together as part of this dwelling where God lives by His Spirit.
**The Jews needed to learn to “hug” the Gentiles into their group.
There should never be conflict between those who are Jesus followers and those who are not followers.
**We should not be proud of our baptism (11-13). We should hug!
**All non-followers can be brought near by Jesus’ blood, so we should hug!
**Jesus brings peace between His followers and those who are not. (14-15) He brings about the desire to hug.
**The gospel is for those who are near or far (17)… in God’s embrace or not.
**Through the Holy Spirit, are all brought into God’s embrace (18)
Conclusion
**Joey and Chandler thought that they hugged too much… A Jesus-follower who is already in the embrace of Christ can NEVER hug too much… can never reach out too much to those outside of God’s embrace and HUG them… imagine a 21st century appeal in this text:
**So now you non-followers are no longer strangers and foreigners. You can be citizens along with the Jesus community. We are God’s family, but He wants to adopt you! You can be His house, built on the foundation of the Bible. And the cornerstone is JESUS! We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy church for the Lord. Through Jesus YOU too can join together as part of this house where God lives by His Holy Spirit.

July 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 2:1-10

WHY SAVE?
Introduction
**DISCUSSION ON MASTERPIECES: Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s David, DaVinci, etc. (using pics helps)
**Why did the great artists create?

Before we met Jesus, we were...
**dead (1)
**doomed (1)
**full of sin (2)
**under Satan’s power (2)
**following evil passions and desires (3)
**born with an evil nature (3)
**under God’s anger (3)
How did God react?
**He showered upon us His mercy and love (4)
**He gave us life through Jesus (5)
**He raised us from the dead (6)
**He seated us in the heavenly realms (6)
**He made us His examples (7)
**He SAVED us (8)

Conclusion
**God did not save us because of what we’ve done (9)
**God saved us because we are HIS MASTERPIECE (10)
**You are God’s great sculpture… His great painting… His incredible architecture… His most treasured work of art!

June 2005: The WHY in Ephesians

Ephesians 1:15-23

WHY PRAY?
Introduction
**Bruce Almighty discussion of his powers to answer prayers (or use clip of his post it or filing ideas)
**People pray for lots of different reasons.
**When Paul learned of the Ephesians how did he react?

He recognized what defines a Church?
**strong faith in Jesus Christ (15)
**love for Christians everywhere (15)
**Christ’s body (23)
**filled by Christ (23)

Then, he prayed. How did Paul pray?
**Never stop thanking God for them (16)
**Constantly (16)
**Ask for spiritual wisdom for them (17)
**Hope they grow in knowledge of God (17)
**Want their hearts to be flooded with light (18)
**Want them to grasp heaven (18)
**Understand the incredible greatness of His power for us who believe (19-22)

Why pray? Because if we want to be a church…
**we must reflect Christ
**we must love other Christians
**we must grow

May 2005: The WHY in Ephesians
