SOAKED IN THE SPIRIT: part 2

SWIMMING LESSON: The Goal of the Spirit is Love
February 24, 2008
with Adam Waters

INTRODUCTION
• Are you ready for your second swimming Lesson?
• It's time to trust you out in the water a little bit.
• QUOTE: "Most people find out what they think the world needs most and go and do it. Instead of doing that, find out what makes you come alive and do that! Because what the world needs most is people who are live."

What the church needs most is SWIMMERS that are alive!
SWIMMERS

 …are WET because they can swim and they choose to swim.
 SATISFY the Spirit’s leading.
 WIN the battles of the flesh.
 INHERIT the Kingdom.
 MANIFEST the character of God.
 Today, we continue to get rid of our waste by getting SOAKED in the Spirit of God. Our beloved Gifter!

1 Corinthians 12:27 – 14:40
 12:27-31 “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages. Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.”
 13:8 “Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!”
 14:1 “Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.”
 14:39-40 “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues. But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.”

PRAYER
On June 25, 1967, the world first heard these words...

"Love, love love! Love, love, love! Love, love, love!
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
There's nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn to play the game...it's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be in time... it's easy.

"All you need is love. All you need is love.
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love love! Love, love, love! Love, love, love!
All you need is love. All you need is love.
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

"There's nothin you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be...it's easy.

"All you need is love. All you need is love.
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love love! Love, love, love! Love, love, love!
All you need is love. All you need is love.
All you need is love, love, love is all you need."

TODAY: All we need is love. All we need is God at the center of our growth. All we need is his power and his Spirit. All we need is Him alive and empowering the life of our church. All we need is the Spirit at the center of our "swimming."

12:31 “So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.”
For GROWTH we must understand:
 This list in 1Corinthians 12 is not exhaustive.
 Only 3 are given a position in the body (apostles, prophets, teachers) and that is due to their usefulness for the entire body.
 No one person has every single gift.
 Desire is KEY! (this desire must echo the need for air!)
 12:31
 14:1
Helping you SWIM!
 Don’t forget that we’re all in this together (12:27).
 Don’t forget that God is not a God of disorder, but of peace (14:33).
 Don’t forget that the Spirit of God ALWAYS has the goal of producing love (13)… for God is LOVE (1John).

SOAKED IN THE SPIRIT: part 1

SWIMMING LESSON: A United Body
February 17, 2008
with Adam Waters

INTRODUCTION
• Are you ready for your first swimmng lesson?
• Last week, we showed you what swimming looks like.
• Now, it's time for us to get in the pool.

SWIMMERS
 …are WET because they can swim and they choose to swim.
 SATISFY the Spirit’s leading.
 WIN the battles of the flesh.
 INHERIT the Kingdom.
 MANIFEST the character of God.
 Today, we begin to get rid of our waste by getting SOAKED in the Spirit of God. Our beloved Gifter!

Told a story: about getting a gallon of vegetable oil dumped on my head in college. It changed the way everything functioned. I lost my shirt. I had to shave my head and face. The elastic in my shorts no longer worked and the shorts doubled in size. I had to double and triple my showers for days. The acne on my face went crazy. Basically, the oil had permeated every aspect of my life in some way or another.

READ: 1Corinthians 12:1-26

“A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.”
 For GROWTH we must focus on the gift source.
 12:1-11
 For GROWTH we must focus on one body.
 12:12-17
 For GROWTH we must focus on the need for others.
 12:18-26

How does this help us swim?
 12:1 – It corrects our misunderstandings and ignorance.
 12:13 – It teaches us reliance on the Spirit of God.
 12:20-21 - It forces us to love others.
 12:25-26 - It gets us taking lessons together.

SOAKED

Are you ready to get SOAKED?
February 10, 2008
with Adam Waters
INTRODUCTION
· How many like to go swimming?
· When you go do you sunbathe/talk? Put feet in? Up to waste and play with kids? Dive off the edge into the deep end?
· This theme is about getting wet! About diving in! About growing! You cannot GROW unless you are willing to get “soaked!”
ARE WE GROWING?
n 2008 is all about growing
n “Get Rid Of Waste Through Hope”
n Hope – reliance, dependence, trust, opposite of independence
n This year, we are going to tell you HOW to swim.
n Today, we are hoping to show you what the finished product will look like.

Galatians 5:16-25
“I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t flesh craves. The flesh wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the flesh desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. When you follow the desires of your flesh, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.”

What does a SOAKED person look like?
n They are WET! Because they can swim and they choose to swim.
n They SATISFY the Spirit’s leading.
n They WIN the battles of the flesh.
n They INHERIT the Kingdom.
n They MANIFEST the character of God.

WHAT KIND OF CHURCH IS THIS? Part 5

"DEVELOPER COMMITMENT DAY"
February 3, 2008
Family Sunday!

Our final value in the Orchard is that of valuing those who commit to “developing” the community. We feel that someone “develops” the community through (1)building up, (2)supporting and (3)serving. There are at least 3 different levels of commitment to each of these. We ask that TODAY, if you are so moved by God’s Spirit, you would decide to be a “Developer” of the Orchard Church and will fill out the following form with your name and then checking one box (or more) in each of the sections.

Beginning on February 3, 2008 (name)______________________ has decided to be a DEVELOPER of “The Orchard Church.” So, I commit to the following:

I will BUILD UP the community by…
Ο Attending weekly “Rain” services.
Ο Regularly attending one of our “Tree Groups.”
Ο Hosting one of our “Tree Groups.”
Ο Leading one of our “Tree Groups.”

I will SUPPORT the community by…
Ο Praying for its needs on a daily basis.
Ο Giving weekly to support the OC’s staff and programs.
Ο Tithing to support the OC.

I will SERVE the community by…
Ο Helping in the “KidZone” (children).
Ο Helping with “Bark” (teens).
Ο Helping with our administration team.
Ο Helping with worship team (PowerPoint, singing, playing, or other).
Ο Helping with guest services (coffee, info center, etc.)
Ο Helping plan/lead our service projects.
Ο Helping with our building maintenance and cleaning.
Ο Other:

This is not a contract with The OC. It is a public commitment you’re making to the community of Jesus. We do not have a formal membership process at The OC, but we promise that the staff will BUILD UP, SUPPORT and SERVE those who chose to commit to being “Developers” of the community.
