HEBREWS is coming soon...

Reading, studying, and writing a lot right now as we prep for our HEBREWS class.

Pray for my intern Kristina and myself that the Lord will give us wisdom & revelation to see what HE wants us to teach. Pray, also, we use our gifts of administration to prepare good notes, handouts and class organization.

HEBREWS will start later this Fall.

Blessings,
Adam

Detailed notes for Galatians 6 - September 1, 2013

Open
·      I have been set free by Christ. I am no longer under bondage to the law (5:1-12).
·      But I need something—Someone—to control my life from within. That Someone is the Holy Spirit (5:13-26).
·      Through the Spirit’s love and power, I have the desire to live for others and not for myself (6:1-10).
·      This life of freedom is so wonderful that I want to live it to the glory of God, for He is the One making it possible (6:11-18)

Galatians 6
ACTION: Grace v. Effort

The cross of Christ
·      The point of this whole thing: it’s about what Jesus did and not about what we can do.
·      I Corinthians 15

Grace for each other
·      Read 6:1-10
·      (KEY) 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
·      Grace to live a new life in Christ in the power of the spirit.
·      Make sure your good deeds are love-driven rather than duty-driven (Mirror).
o   2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
o   2 Corinthians 5 “11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.”
o   The legalist is not interested in bearing burdens. Instead, he adds to the burdens of others.
·      Nothing reveals the wickedness of legalism better than the way the legalist treats those who have sinned. (Focus on your growth not theirs)
·      This is about the unity and blessing of the whole body… never competition.
·      Are we investing in the flesh?
·      Are we investing in the Spirit?
·      Is our bearing the body’s burdens from a place of law? …or out of love?

Rely only on His grace
·      Read 6:11-18
·      Grace doesn’t diminish hard work… rather our starting place is the new identity we’ve been learning about… we work from a place of rest (Hebrews) and not from a place of striving.
·      6:12 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 16 And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.
·      Ephesians 2 “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
·      2 Corinthians 12 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Paul keeps coming back to the cross!
·      See what large CAPITAL LETTERS I’m now using in my own hand.
·      Galatians 2:20-21, 3:13, 4:5, 5:11, 5:24, 6:12
·      He knew the person of the cross intimately (Jesus 45x).
·      He knew the power of the cross.
o   In the death of Jesus, the power of God is released to give believers victory. It is no longer we who lives but Jesus living in and through us!
o   The legalist inflates the ego, flatters the flesh, and pleases the world, but Christ in us crucifies all 3!
·      He knew the purpose of the cross.
o   A new people of God.
o   A new creation in Christ.
o   A new nation.
§  BE FREE à “Because of Christ’s victory, we can `reign in life’ through Jesus Christ (read Romans 5:17). In other words, the believer belongs to a `new creation,’ a spiritual creation, that knows nothing of the defects and limits of the `old creation’ (read 2Cor 5:17).”

(Mirror) 6:18 “Brothers, may the revelation of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be the rule of your spirit. Amen.”

WRAP UP – 6 Arguments Reminder

You are no longer under law but under the amazing grace of God.

1.     Keep your eyes open to the true gospel of Grace.

2.     God’s grace has justified you by your faith. No amount of works will ever accomplish what God’s grace already has.

3.     God’s grace has given you a new identity in Christ. You now have right standing with the Father. He sees you as He sees Jesus. His blood has covered all of your sins. You are no longer under a curse, but under grace.

4.     By God’s grace, you have adopted into the Father’s family. He chose you! He has given you every right as an heir of His Kingdom. You are not an orphan. You are His and you are promised His inheritance.

5.     God’s grace has completely changed your nature! You are FREE because of what Jesus has done for you. And not only that, He hasn’t left you to yourself. He has placed the fullness of Himself in YOU by the power of His Spirit. So you can live as Jesus originally designed for you to live. All of your bondage has been broken by the grace of God.

6.     God’s grace has freed you from responsibility. The cross has empowered you to love and to just “be.” Our belief allows us to rely fully on God’s grace and let Him work through us. Human effort will not make us new. God’s grace has already done that.

Write these on your hearts
Put them in your Bible.
Set them on your mirror so you can begin to see like God sees you!
