SOAKED IN TRANSPARENCY: part 4

1 JOHN 3:1-24
September 28, 2008
with Adam Waters

INTRO
How many of you have ever lied to your parents? How many of us have ever had our children lie to us? Right now, my son–either through his shyness or misunderstanding–answers no to just about everything. When we ask him if he wants a cookie or ice cream, he shrinks back and says “no.” When we ask him if he’s tired (especially when we know he is), he says no and gets frustrated with us. The only time we can get him to say yes is when we throw our hands up in the air… “YES!”

TRANSPARENT CHILDREN are constantly approaching the Father!
1. Approach him as one who is ADOPTED 3:1 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
2. Approach him with PURITY (or to receive it!) 3:3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.
3. Approach him because you’ve remained PRINCIPLED 3: 6 Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is.
4. Approach him as RIGHTEOUS even when you don’t think you are! 3:7 Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous.
5. Approach him as an OBEDIENT child without fear. 3:14 If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.
6. Approach him because you are people of ACTION! 3:18 Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
o But if we are the body, Why aren't His arms reaching? Why aren't His hands healing? Why aren't His words teaching? And if we are the body Why aren't His feet going? Why is His love not showing them there is a way? There is a way
7. Approach him with CONFIDENCE because of a clean CONSCIENCE. 3:21-22 Dear friends, if our conscience is clear, we can come to God with bold confidence. And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.
8. Approach him because the HOLY Spirit is alive in you! 3:24 Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.

WRAP IT UP
The truth is that none of us will ever be fully worthy of approaching God face to face… and that is what hinders us too often… we think we have to be perfectly pure, righteous or obedient. We ALL are works in progress.
· Approach your Father honestly, and everything will begin to fall into place.
· There is no purity or true obedience without spending honest time with God first.
· Let the Holy Spirit “fill and control you (Eph).”
· Let your actions show yourself redeemed (see James)!
· Live WIDE AWAKE with the knowledge that GOD IS HERE and desperately wants to be involved whether you want him to or not.

SOAKED IN TRANSPARENCY: part 3

1JOHN 2:7-29
September 21, 2008
with Adam Waters

INTRO
As we approach November and another presidential election, we are faced with many things that only seem to be on our radar every 4 years: the right to own firearms; pro-life vs. pro-choice; bigger government v. smaller government; taxes or no; social security; and more.
During election years, the candidates do their best to tell you what they think 51% of the country will agree with them on... I’m not here today to push a political agenda, but rather to address the idea of the fact that Obama and McCain both are going to try to tell you: which laws they like, which they don’t, which need tweaking, which need a complete overhaul, which align with their personal faith (or don’t), which laws of the land are up-for-discussion…
As John wrote his letter (1John), he was writing to a group of Christians who had been taught by certain special interest groups (most notably the Gnostics and Romans) that several aspects of their faith in Jesus were up for negotiation. Into that arena, John pens his letter and tells the church that real, honest, transparent Christianity has some things that are Non-Negotiable.

OLD/NEW COMMAND: Love one another.
1. This command is true if the darkness is disappearing. (2:8-11)
o The cobwebs/cockroaches are being cleaned away.
o We don’t hate other believers.
o We don’t cause others to stumble.

2. This command is true if you are growing in Christ (2:12-14)
o Sins forgiven.
o Know Jesus.
o Won the battle with Satan.
o Know the Father.
o God’s word is alive in your hearts.

3. This command is true if you’ve forsaken the will of the world (2:15-17)
o The earth itself is not evil. Creation is God’s… and he called it “good.”
o World offers physical pleasure.
o World offers lust (covet) for all we see.
o World offers pride in our possessions.
o These are not God’s creation.
o World fades… the will of God is eternal.

4. This command is true if truth is winning in your lives (2:18-27)
o Antichrist brings lies, denies the Father, and leaves the body.
o Christian is anointed by the Spirit, knows truth and falsehood, and confesses Jesus & Father as Lord of our lives.
o Truth helps us to remain faithful and remain in KOINONIA with God.

5. This command is true if we continue to be transparent with God and men (2:27-29)
o Continue to let the Spirit teach you.
o Continue to live in KOINONIA with Jesus.
o Continue to do what is right.

WRAP IT UP
The command to “love one another” is true in a community of faith (a church) that is transparent, alive, and growing into the church God has designed for her to be.

The command to “love one another” is worthless in a church that is dark, dying and deluged in the desires of this world and not the next.

“Loving one another” is practice for eternity, not something that will advance you in the world…

SOAKED IN TRANSPARENCY: Part 2

1JOHN 1:5-2:6
September 14, 2008
with Adam Waters

INTRO
· Athletes lying to themselves
· Someone at work who "thinks they're the model employee"
· Someone losing their hair

TEXT
1:5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
2:1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 3We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

GOD-DEFINED TRANSPARENCY (v5) – He is light and there is no darkness in him at all.

FOUR BATTLES WE FACE AS WE TRY TO BE TRANSPARENT
1. Lying to ourselves v. Living in the Light
2. Lying to ourselves v. Confession
3. Lying to ourselves v. Pleading
4. Lying to ourselves v. Obedience

Fellowship TRANSLATED
(koinonia): it indicates the setting aside of private interest and desire, and joining with another or a group of others for common purposes.
(meknow): to remain in a continued relationship

WRAP IT UP
What will it take for us to stop lying to ourselves and come transparent before God and men?
