Small Group Sunday - September 11, 2011

http://urbana.thevineyardchurch.us/sermon/more-love-and-more-power-in-your-small-groups/

More Love and More Power in Your Small Group!

Opening
·      Pretend to be filling out my connect card as the video stops & then, say jokingly, of course, the following…
·      `Oh “hi,” I was just realizing that this is the best chance I have to sign up for a group for this Fall Semester. Even though I’m already in a group, I want to make sure that I get my name in so that my group doesn’t fill up!’
·      All kidding aside though friends, maybe for the first time ever, we are giving you permission today to doodle during the message.
·      If you have not signed up yet for a small group, take out the Menu, grab a pen and your Connect Card.
·      And, while I’m talking, feel free to browse through the groups and find the one that best suits you!
·      And, if you are already a part of a group, (even if it’s been for 10+ years!) we don’t need your contact info… just your name at the top and your group name in the box at the bottom of the CCard.

PRAYER & WELCOME

ME
I love my weekends. My day off is Friday and I get to spend those mornings with at least some of my kids. Then, on Friday nights we get to do some family stuff. Saturday mornings are another great part of our weeks. We spend time doing stuff outside, working in the yard or swimming. This is, also, a great chance for us to go to breakfast together as a family (or daddy makes a donut run J). I love my weekends. And, most weeks I would say that those days are the highlight of our family time together.

…but it’s not always the best time. Not long ago, a Wednesday night was the best family time of the week. After school and work, we jumped into kids’ pool for an hour, mom made us “breakfast for dinner” (always a big hit), then the kids got their PJ’s on, grabbed their blankets and curled up with mom & dad to watch Tangled. It was totally the best family night of the week… and it wasn’t even the weekend.

WE
Why do I tell you all of this?

Well, we have been striving to “live out” the teachings of More Love & More Power throughout this series. And hopefully, our (Saturday) Sunday meetings have been one of the best days of your entire week. Hopefully, during these times you have been freed to worship God and hear his voice as you follow the call on your life & on our church during this season. Maybe, you’ve even taken the Sunday challenges and gone out to love your city through practical and spiritual exercises. Also, we are praying that More Vision has been stirred in your hearts & dreams.

But, we don’t want you to miss this:
We continually want to see more love & power come outside of the Sunday meeting!

Just as my weekends are the best times with my family, I still want to spend time with them throughout the rest of the week!

So with us, as we see God moving powerfully among us on the weekend worship services, so we want to see him move powerfully with us throughout the week.

GOD
Let’s take a look at what the apostles & the early church did after the day of Pentecost (the day when the Holy Spirit first visited them in power & 3,000 new believers joined the family).

Acts 2:42-47 (The Message)
“They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers. Everyone around was in awe—all those wonders and signs done through the apostles! And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common. They sold whatever they owned and pooled their resources so that each person's need was met. They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved.”

Wow, that sounds pretty good doesn’t it! Do you here how their lives were completely turned upside down by the power of the Spirit. It doesn’t say that they went back to their old lives does it? Now, I’m pretty sure they went back to work their jobs, but their extra curricular really changes. And, I think there are some really strong applications for us of how we can see More Love & Power happen outside the Sunday meeting, especially in our groups…

How does MLMP happen in your small group?
(1) Devotion to the apostle’s teachings
a.     not just knowing Bible but living it out
b.     We desperately want you to study your Scriptures (reminder of how we started our year with “Eat & Pray God’s Word”) and we strive to be a church that is “Biblically Thoughtful,” but…
c.      …the Scriptures (& in fact Christianity) are not something personal but are meant to be lived out in community.
d.     There are over 40 different “one another’s” in the apostle’s teachings of the new testament: love, encourage, spur to good deeds, confess your sins, be kind, offer hospitality, be patient, accept and on & on!
e.     Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.”

(2) Devotion to each other à fellowship… devotion to “doing life” together
a.     Do you see what happens when we devote ourselves to the apostles’ teachings? It releases in us devotion to the thing that God loves more than anything else… us/people!
b.     We are free to begin pursuit of each other. We begin to devote ourselves to “doing life” together.
c.      It always amazes me that we sometimes miss this as followers of Jesus. The most powerful day in the church was when it started on the day of Pentecost and that led to people caring more for each other than they did about themselves.
d.     Which leads to my favorite thing ever in scripture J… they began to desire time with each other.

(3) Devotion to eating together à common meal, communion, cookouts
a.     Explain the “love feast.”
b.     Explain how we can live this out in communion with Jesus and with each other every chance we get… do realize that Heaven is described as the “wedding feast”?
c.      When we eat together in true fellowship & remembering the sacrifice Jesus made for us, we are practicing for eternity.
d.     Which leads us to celebrate and invite more of Jesus into our groups!

(4) Devotion to prayer à worship & ministry
a.     When we study scripture & apply it to our local community, we begin to want more of God’s Kingdom alive in our groups.
b.     We begin to worship the Risen King.
c.      We begin to invite the power of the Holy Spirit into our groups, so that our lives & the lives of our friends will be changed!

YOU
When we devote ourselves to these things…
(1) The Holy Spirit moves powerfully among us in signs and wonders.
a.     Cannot be afraid of this.
b.     1 Corinthians 14:22-25
c.      Our goal is to change lives & the Spirit alone can do it.

(2) The Holy Spirit moves us to great generosity and service.
a.     Good section of the message to recognize all your leaders.
b.     Also, a good place to mention Outreach Options Menu for your groups.

(3) The Holy Spirit moves us to both corporate & intimate worship.
a.     Most not surprised by the corporate worship.
b.     But the thing is that when we’re devoted to the stuff of the Kingdom & we desire to see the Holy Spirit move…
c.      Then, we will never miss an opportunity to spend time in the presence of the King!

(4) The Holy Spirit moves others to join the family!
a.     I love that this text says that “daily” people were getting saved. Not just at the Sunday meeting, but daily!
b.     That means we have to meet more than Sundays doesn’t it J.
c.      McIntyre and Wheet’s story (PICTURES PLEASE).
A year ago, I felt like God was leading me to take the How to Lead a High Impact Small Group.  I had a big desire to be used as a small group leader but honestly had no idea where to begin.  I struggled with a huge fear of failure& with leading a group, the fears were definitely there.  Ironically, at the training, another person got a word for me, “harvest.”  “Exciting,” I thought? I figured I would take the risk but wouldn’t be surprised if no one ever showed up.

Around that same time, my wife (Bri) and I met Jeff and Sandy Welter.  God started knitting our hearts to the Welter’s hearts right away. Then, one Sunday afternoon, Bri took the risk every member of the Vineyard is asked to take and asked Sandy if we could pray for her right then and there.  Sandy agreed, and Bri and I were able to bless Sandy in the name of Jesus.

The Welter’s started attending the Vineyard, & birthed a new and growing relationship with Jesus.  Through our friendship with the Welters, we were introduced to Butch and Chrissy Wheet. God was weaving together a beautiful story, working behind the scenes, while we were all oblivious. We got together for a cookout or just to hang out, and Jesus was moving the entire time.

One day Butch told me he noticed something positive about my life, and he wanted it! Bri and I started getting together with the Wheets, and they started opening up their lives to Jesus and the love He had for them.  I still remember how full of questions Butch was. He was seeking God, but I don’t think he was prepared for the no strings attached love and grace of Jesus.  We asked Butch if we could pray for him; Butch gave us permission so we invited the presence of God to visit Butch.  We blessed Butch and his family and asked God to begin His work of restoration, to heal the hurts from the past, and to reveal to them the great love the Father had for them.

The next morning the enemy attacked by sending Butch to the ER with unexplained pains in his abdomen.  I remember Hap instructing us that when the enemy attacks, we counter-attack in prayer. So, that’s what we did. Jesus was pursuing Butch and the full force of the powers of Hell didn’t stand a chance against the furious love Jesus had for Butch.  Little did we know, Chrissy (wife) was already working behind the scenes trusting in the power of Jesus.  She was praying for Butch and shortly later the pain evaporated.

Later, the Wheets visited church.  During, their second visit, God came like a flood. I remember feeling very uncomfortable in worship because I was so worried about what Butch was thinking.  God whispered, “Don’t worry about Butch, I’m going to meet with him.  Now I want to meet with you.” Suddenly there was peace, I was free to worship, and I enjoyed God’s presence.

Later that same day, Butch and Chrissy asked us over to their house.  I noticed Butch seemed different, but I wasn’t sure why.  As we sat in the living room visiting, Butch looked me in the eye & asked me if I was praying for him during the service earlier that day.  “Busted,” I thought, “Did I just offend my friend?”  I answered Butch that I had been praying for him that God would bless him and meet with him.  Butch looked at me and as tears started welling up in his eyes said, “Well, He came to me, and I let Him in.” Praise Jesus!  Butch then went on to describe the peace he felt as the Spirit of God came into his life.

From there, Butch and Chrissy started sprinting to Jesus.  They couldn’t get enough of Him.  A few weeks later Butch’s sister Aimee had moved to town and started at the Vineyard.  She now is pursuing Jesus and is on the journey of her life.  Bri and I asked if they would like to start a small group with us and the Welters.  Then, Bri invited another couple that has a daughter the same age as ours. A few weeks later we met together in our home & another couple joined us.  God filled our home with new friends from relationships that he orchestrated and filled our home with His presence as we met together.  Since then, we have been learning and growing together how much God desires to be in intimate relationship with us.  Also, we’re learning our identity through the mind-blowing work of Christ.  Lately God has put several of our other friends and neighbors in Mahomet on our hearts so we’ve been praying for them.  Praise Jesus for His great love; the harvest has just begun!

WE
Well, if that story doesn’t get you excited about more love & power coming outside the Sunday meeting, then nothing will J

We want everyone to join a group in this church. In fact, we want to see more people in groups than come on Sundays. We believe that the key to us having an amazing Urbana campus is the small group system!
Imagine the Love and Power that would move through our church as we committed ourselves to the same ideals that the early church did.
Imagine the freedom the Holy Spirit would have to use us to change our cities.

That’s why we have groups that include…
·      Middle school, high school & college students
·      Young adults, singles, married, family friendly & 50+ groups.
·      Special groups focused on addictions, grief, divorce, financial freedom, etc.
·      We have groups in Champaign, Urbana, Savoy, Philo, Tolono, Mahomet, St. Joseph and more (all our campuses were started this way!).
·      We have groups for people who want the basics of Christianity (Alpha).
·      We have groups called ENGAGE that are for people who have never been in a group and are nervous about going to a group for the first time.
·      We have leadership groups & training groups.
·      We have a group for YOU!
Don’t be overwhelmed. We don’t want you to choose everything, but we don’t want you to choose nothing. Pic one group… get plugged in… and see the Kingdom of God come as you devote yourself to More Love & More Power in your life!

Prayer & Introduce Offering
After worship, I’ll be back up for ministry time…

MINISTRY:
Introduce the words on the screens (remind people of pre-service prayer teams).
Specific words for this message:
·      Prayer for our small group leaders & coaches.
·      Prayer for those who are thinking about launching a group.

August 7, 2011 - More Love!

My latest sermon podcasted here - http://urbana.thevineyardchurch.us/weekend/speaker/adam-waters/

My latest sermon notes (sorry I don't have Tim's responses scripted but they're in the podcast):

1Corinthians 13:1-8 using the NIV
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.”

Other than John 3:16, there is perhaps no other text in all of Scripture that is more quoted than this one. I’ve heard it read at weddings, funerals, and ordinations.
I’ve heard people talk about it in parenting, marriage counseling, youth & children’s ministries.
I’ve heard it used to describe the love of God, the interaction of the trinity & the character of Christ.
It is a beautiful Scripture…

And for us today, one of the most powerful things for us to hide deep in our hearts after a sermon series on the Holy Spirit and a conference where we’ve sought More Love & More Power from the hand of the Father.

You see, the dilemma for me today is that we could use this Scripture and find application for it in any of the situations I mentioned, but Paul (the author of 1 Corinthians) was using this to make sure that the Corinth church understood God’s heart in the midst of Him moving powerfully among them.

God’s heart is always for his people. Jesus modeled that in everything that he did. That’s why Paul, in the midst of a great discourse on spiritual power, giftedness and unity in the body (12), stops to talk about love (13)… and then goes on to powerfully describe the proper use of power through prophecy and tongues (14).
He was using this language to make sure that they didn’t miss who God was and who he wanted us to be no matter how much power they were experiencing.

WE will never see the Kingdom of God come powerfully if we do not love people.

Jesus gave 2 commands to the disciples as he left them (Acts 1:7)… Wait for the Holy Spirit and then go be my witnesses to people.

We must have a heart for people. We must love. We must extend God’s grace and mercy. These are the heartbeat of the Kingdom. These are the characteristics of the Father. These are the character of Christ.

Can you imagine if Jesus healed the sick without compassion for them?
Can you imagine if he raised the dead and shouted “look at me”?
Can you imagine if he lost his patience with the blind men?
Or said to demonized, “you’ve committed to many sins to be set free”?

No, all he did was birthed from that love in 1Corinthians 13…
A patient love. A love that kept no record of wrongs. A love that wasn’t proud or self-seeking. A love that protected and hoped for those whom Jesus was pursuing.

I want to see the Kingdom come powerfully. I long for it. Our church leaders pray fervently for it. We are so excited about how the Lord is breaking in through our Summer of the Spirit series and how the Holy Spirit breathed on us during MLMP that we are continuing the MLMP theme for the next several weeks.

But the Kingdom will never break through without love.  It must start with our heart for people. It must start with our brokenness for our community. It must begin with love!  We need the Holy Spirit to do that work in our hearts.  Come Holy Spirit!

Prayer
Introduce Myself
Welcome All Campuses

So what do we do with this? How do we begin with love? Even the Beatles told us that “All You Need Is Love, Love, Love is all you Need.”
Is it that simple? No, probably not…

So here’s the great part about love and power. Both are birthed by the amazing Spirit of God’s presence living in our lives! You don’t have to work up a fake passion. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, he gives us the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Then the Spirit begins to produce amazing fruit in our lives. And the major fruit is love because God is love. Listen to this amazing verse:

Romans 5: 5b  “For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

Do you hear it friends? When we give our lives to Jesus, he replaces our human ability to love with his love. That 1Corinthians 13 love! Isn’t that incredible?

Let me share a story that might help you….

When we first moved back to Illinois 2 years ago, the thing that we kept asking the Father was how do we love our community, when we don’t know where we’re going or what we’re doing.

You see, we lived in Cincy, OH for 10 years, so by the time we left there it was easy to care about that city. We loved our city. We loved people completely. We rolled out of bed and cared about local politics, our school system, our church and our neighbors. We had relationships at every level of that community.

Then God asked us to pick up and move… and Happy had the answer of where… back to central Illinois where I grew up.  That sounded pretty good, but the only problem was that Hap didn’t have a job for us & God seemed to say move and I’ll fill in the details later.

So, for the first 10 months my job was doing home inspections on delinquent loans & foreclosures for banks (exciting huh?). But God was at work. As I traveled around central Illinois (Peoria, Clinton, Bloomington, Paris, Danville, Rantoul, Paxton, Sullivan, Urbana… all over), Jesus and I had lots of time to talk. I kept asking him what he wanted me to do & where did he want me to serve?

At the same time, I asked him to break my heart for a community. I asked him to open my eyes to the needs of the people that I met and interacted with. During those 10 months, Jesus did so much with me.

First, he totally broke my heart for all of the lost and hurting that I came in contact with… sometimes moving to the point of tears …always fun to drop off delinquent mortgage papers to a family when you’ve been crying… of course, they received them a little better.

Second, Jesus totally moved my heart with a desire to see Champaign-Urbana be transformed by the power of God’s amazing gospel of grace.

You see, I couldn’t be a pastor at this church without first having a deposit of the Father’s love in my heart for you & for our community. It wasn’t that I didn’t love people at this church or in our town, but I wasn’t burdened for you & for my neighbors. (Wake up in the middle of the night praying for our church, our city, my neighbors, kindof a love!)

I loved, but it wasn’t always patient and kind… it didn’t always protect, trust and persevere… The Father through the power of the Holy Spirit needed to produce in me HIS KIND of love for you and for our cities. It couldn’t be my own love… that would definitely fail on its own …but God’s kind of love won’t fail you & me as we pursue our cities.

Do you see the difference? Anyone can come into a community with the truth of the gospel… even filled with the power of the Holy Spirit… but it takes you and I together filled with love (and the Spirit!) to continue the ministry of Jesus

YOU
Over the next few weeks, we want you to become filled with more love by the power and Presence of the Holy Spirit. We want the Holy Spirit to give you more power. We want to see God’s Kingdom come through you. We want to see you bring hope, healing and God’s voice to your community.

We want to be a church mobilized to love our cities in the power of the Holy Spirit.

This seems like a huge task doesn’t it… to be patient and kind, keeping no record of wrongs with you community… if that’s what love really is?

But, we want to challenge you as Jesus did that… Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue to teach you how to practice healing as you let your light shine. We will continue to teach you how to bring God’s voice through prophecy as you let your light shine. We will teach you how to fulfill the Vineyard’s vision as you let your light shine. And we will teach you how to do all of those things in your small group. We really want to see your “deeds” shine outside the walls of the church as you love your city.

Today, we want to start in a place that will be challenging, but might also seem a little less intimidating to those who are nervous about praying for someone to be healed at Wal-Mart. We want to begin with this idea of extending MoLoMoPo through the practice of kindness outreach… or simple, small things done just because you love people …anticipating nothing in return …not to invite them to church, but rather to extend God’s presence to those around you.

I want to take a minute and introduce you to a good friend of mine and one of our pastors: Tim Wheeler. Tim and his wife Melissa (and their 3 soon to be 4 kids) recently moved to the Charleston area where they are hoping to launch a new campus for the Vineyard church. They already have small groups started and held their first Alpha this past spring.

Now, all of that is, of course, very exciting for our church’s vision, but I wanted to introduce you to Tim for another reason today. First, Tim has a real passion to share God’s love with those outside the church walls. Second, this Fall Tim is going to begin helping us on the Urbana campus really think through some good strategies for doing Kindness Outreach to our city.

Adam:  Welcome Tim, could you share a little of your passion for the lost?
Tim:  Sure…

Adam: In fact, at the Vineyard Conference in Phoenix, God really moved your heart this year did he not?
Tim:   Yeah God really did…

Adam: Tim led one of workshops at our MLMP conference a few weeks ago. Can you help us understand some of the challenge you laid out for your class that day?
Tim:   We talked about…

Adam: What were some of the things that you had them do? And could we try and tackle some of those things today?
Tim:  Well I had a few projects…

Adam: I love hearing those stories. In fact, let me share a quick one about how my small group went to Hessell Park last week… hotdogs, popsicles… bless Ray… Hope Center/Vern… invited to Beginnings… kids playing…

As we wrap up today, I want to remind you that if we want the Kingdom of God to show up powerfully in our community’s life, then it must be born out of love… a love that is patient & kind… a love that does not envy or boast… a love that is humble, polite, uplifting, positive and encouraging… a love that never fails.

A love that is produced and enflamed by the Holy Spirit. After all, that’s the fruit of what the Holy Spirit produces (Gal. 5) in us as he transforms your life.

Tim shared some of the ways that we are challenging the Urbana campus to step out and love our city. At our other 4 campuses, you are welcome to use those ideas or your campus pastors may want to share some ideas for your local campus…

ADAM: prayer & offering

The Call to Be a Radical Disciple - June 5, 2011

This summer we are starting a Vineyard School of Leaders. I had the privilege of launching the first week of teaching. THe overseer of the program (Jim Egli) gave me the Radical Disciple topic and here's a snapshot of what that talk looked like.

OPENING
RADICAL – child of the 80’s… BMX bike racing… lame slang word used in surfing and Xtreme sports.

Dictionary definition: extreme, especially as regards change from accepted or traditional forms: a radical change in the policy of a company. Favoring drastic political, economic, or social reforms: radical ideas; radical and anarchistic ideologues. NOT superficial.

Disciple: follower of Jesus Christ

So a radical disciple is an extremely different follower of Jesus who is not artificial, but authentic!

Jonah Veggie Tales Movie: Show clip of chapter 5.

Jonah Story: explain the tension of the Jonah story - He is the example of a non-radical.
4:11 1 “But Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?”

Part 1 – The INVASION of Radical Disciples
·      This is NOT a male only talk… This is about getting you to choose a dangerous path of FAITH.
·      Robert the Bruce says of William Wallace: “Uncompromising men are easy to admire.”
·      The call to be a radical disciple is the way of UNCOMPROMISING Christian leaders.

Unleash Your Faith
·      Who in this room has faith in God?
·      Hebrews 11:1-2 “What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot see. God gave His approval to people in days of old because of their faith.”
·      Hebrews 11:33-38 By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions, quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight. Women received their loved ones back again from death. But others were tortured, refusing to turn from God in order to be set free. They placed their hope in a better life after the resurrection. Some were jeered at, and their backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in prisons. Some died by stoning, some were sawed in half, and others were killed with the sword. Some went about wearing skins of sheep and goats, destitute and oppressed and mistreated. They were too good for this world, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.
·      Hebrews 11:38 (NIV) ~ The world was not worthy of them!

But do you have Untamed Faith
·      Tragedy to civilize our faith. (Rev 2:1-5 “forgotten first love”)
·      John the baptizer tells of Jesus’ different kind of life: Holy Spirit and with fire is in all four gospels (Matthew 3, Mark 1, Luke 3, John 1, Acts 2).
·      Jesus’ Invitation: the call is not to ‘come and listen’ but to “Come and Follow Me!” The radical way is about love, intimacy, passion and sacrifice

Challenge
·      Hebrews 12:1-4 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people;* then you won't become weary and give up. After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin.
·      Radical discipleship risks life itself for the freedom of others.
·      EXERCISE/CHALLENGE: write down an area in which you've compromised or become complacent in your faith.
·      REWRITING WALLACE: Yes, live the Barbarian Way and you may lose friends, respect or even your job. Sit still and you'll be comfortable…at least for a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance to start over and tell our enemies, our family and our friends that they may have good lives, but there will never, ever be anything like the freedom we have in Jesus!

Part 2 - THE CALL to a life of faith
DANGEROUS INVITATION: Mushroom Eaters: who in their right mind was ever hungry enough to think that eating a fungus/cooking up a fungus was a good idea!?!
-The men and women closest to God will most powerfully live out the raw and untamed spirit of faith.

churches have several versions of the Invitation
·      Civilized Version: Jesus died & rose, so that you can life a life of comfort, security and indulgence. (Diminishes life after death)
·      Simple-Minded Version: simply confess & believe and you’ll be saved from hellfire & torture, then you’ll go to heaven when you die. (Diminishes life on earth)
·      Jesus Version: Deny yourself, take up your cross daily and follow me. (the real call)
·      Hebrews 11 folk: The were not disappointed, understood their call, and chose it willingly. For them love & sacrifice were inseparable.
·      CRUX: A world without God cannot wait for us to choose the safe path.

RISKY BUSINESS: If you’re hungry enough you’ll eat.
·      Jesus never lied about the danger or cost (Matthew 10 or 2 Corinthians 11), but invites us to a life of uncertainty, mystery and risk.
·      CRUX: To walk in the character of Christ is always the right choice, regardless of the outcome (Betsie and Corrie ten Boom). Instead of finding confidence to live as we should regardless of our circumstances, we have used it as justification to choose the path of least resistance, least difficulty, least sacrifice. Instead of concluding it is best to be wherever God wants us to be, we have decided that wherever it is best for us to be is where God wants us. Actually, God’s will for us is less about our comfort than it is about our contribution. God would never choose for us safety at the cost of significance. God created you so that your life would count, not so that you could count the days of your life.

CHALLENGE
·      “Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.” (Matthew 11)
·      It’s time to rediscover the Call of Christ.
·      John the Baptist: Defied anyone who would deny the legitimacy of Jesus. He declared his subservience to  the purpose and person of Jesus Christ.
·      EXERCISE/CHALLENGE: will you commit today to telling the Father “not my will but yours be done”? will you choose to hear his voice despite the noise of every other voice pouring into your heart?
·      BAGGINS: “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off too. Do you realize that this is the very path that goes through Mirkwood, and that if you let it, it might take you to the Lonely Mountain or even further and to worse places?”
·      BAGGINS REWRITE: “It’s a dangerous business, friends, going out your door. You walk by faith, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where the Holy Spirit might sweep you off too. Do you realize that “The Radical Discipleship Call” is the very path that Christ took, and that if you let it, it might take you on lonely journeys, or even further or to harder places?”

Part 3 -OUR TRIBE - Who are you joining up with?
John 3 ~
“There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee.2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. "Rabbi," he said, "we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you." 3 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, unless you are born again,* you cannot see the Kingdom of God." 4 "What do you mean?" exclaimed Nicodemus. "How can an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born again?" 5 Jesus replied, "I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.*6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.*7 So don't be surprised when I say, `You* must be born again.'8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit." 9 "How are these things possible?" Nicodemus asked. 10 Jesus replied, "You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don't understand these things?11 I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won't believe our testimony.”

BORN OF WATER
·      The entire focus of our faith has been the elimination of sin, which is important but inadequate.
·      It should be about the unleashing of a unique faith: you cannot meet God and remain unchanged. When God lives in you, there is transformation… you are no longer suited for a normal life.
·      Extraordinary faith: 1Peter 2:9-10 “Called out of darkness and into light!”
·      Original faith: If you are already a follower of Jesus and have been domesticated, you have lost the power to be who God intends for you to be. You must go to a primal place, a place in the presence of the Most High God and there be changed.
·      Wonderfully, untamed faith: Hearing God is not only normal, but essential proof of belonging to God (Jeremiah 31:33ff – “write on them, live in them, be their God and be my peeps”)
·      EwMc STORY – God doesn’t love me… yes he does… I want it to snow… fell asleep, she told everyone… changed her mind… drove me out of mine

BORN OF SPIRIT
·      Tribe of Irrational People: Noah, Elijah, David, Hosea, Moses… and these are the most popular ones.
·      These people and many like them were the radical tribe. Their stories began and ended with God. They were mystical warriors called out to advance the cause of the Creator of the universe. Every one of us is a follower of Jesus is called to join the SAME TRIBE, to live the same way.
·      The civilized build shelters and invite God to stay with them: the radical tribe moves with God wherever He chooses to go.
o   Civilized Christian has routine: radical tribe has a mission.
o   CC knows the letter of the law: radical tribe lives the law of the Spirit
o   CC loves tradition: radical tribe loves challenges.
o   CC is satisfied with ritual: radical tribe lives and thrives in the mystical.
o   CC has religious stability and certainty: radical tribe has risk and mystery.
·      My story of Jesus’ call to be a mouthpiece.

CHALLENGE
The radical call confronts us with all we love and all we fear. We resist love to avoid pain and squelch our dream out of fear of failure. For the Spirit of God to unleash dreams and visions within our souls, we must become free to risk and to fail. Every dream born of God is fueled by love. Every conversation to be had with God challenges the boundaries of our imagination. When we turn to God, His love transforms us and ignites a new passion within us. All that we have loved is consumed by the passion of a new heart. We discover the power and force of love in its purest form. At the same time, when we turn our hearts toward God, all of our fears are consumed by one fear. We are called to fear God only. There is an important reason for this. What we fear is what we’re subject to; our fears define our master. Where there is no fear, there is no control. When we fear God and God only, we are no longer bound by all of the other fears that would hold us captive. God will not hold us captive by fear though, but by love. Join the TRIBE that allows for us to live out dreams greater than ourselves. A place to have our dreams nurtured, developed and unleashed.

CHARACTER (Yoda)
LUKE: Oh, no. We'll never get it out now.
YODA: So certain are you. Always with you it cannot be done. Hear you nothing that I say?
LUKE: Master, moving stones around is one thing. This is totally different.
YODA: No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned.

YODA REWRITE:
YOU: Oh, no. I can’t change the way I live my life.
Jesus: So certain are you. Always with you it cannot be done. Haven’t you heard what I said?
YOU: Master, going to church is one thing… This is totally different.
Jesus: No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned and follow me.

Part 4 -THE REVOLT
Two thousand years ago God started a revolt against the religion He started. So don’t ever put it past God to cause a groundswell movement against churches & Christian institutions that bear His name. If He was willing to turn Judaism upside down, don’t think for a moment our institutions are safe from a divine revolt.

Violent Engagement
There is a revolt taking place, and its command center is the kingdom of God. Everywhere the kingdom of God advances, there is a violent engagement against a dark kingdom. To be born of God is to be made a citizen in the kingdom of God, and the kingdom of God is at war. Do not confuse this kingdom with paradise. Salvation is not reentry into a Paradise Lost; it is enlistment in the mission of God.

Engage it within the church
·      The sellers of goods had made access to God a business. They had made forgiveness something you could purchase. They had made the guilt and shame of others the marketplace for their profit. They had made the house of God into a den of robbers & thieves. They had become so good at religion that they had no need for God. They were so full of themselves that they had no room for God. When it came down to it, they loved their religion far more than they longed to know the God who created them. They treasured the civilization built around their religion and despised the Radical Faith from which it was born. They would rather have the temple than the Presence of God.
·      When our faith is refined, we are no longer dangerous to the darkness.

Engage it within the community
·      The driving purpose of this Revolt is to liberate every person who longs to find freedom in God.
·      Robert the Bruce vs. His Father "Compromise vs. Charging forth with Passion."
·      Too often we say, “Good needs to be done, but someone else will take care of it.” The Revolt tolerates no such abdication of responsibility. Every citizen of the kingdom of God is brought into the heat of the conflict between good and evil. Everyone who swears allegiance to Jesus bears responsibility for humanity.
·      When you enter the kingdom of God, there is no safe zone or waiting room. There really isn’t even a boot camp. It’s on-the-job, on-the-field training.

Love Untamed
Radicals measure only heart and action.

Untamed for God
·      No one has loved more deeply than God. Has anyone ever been more betrayed? God would not know suffering if He did not know love. But because He is Love, He chose to suffer on our behalf. Without love there is no glory in suffering.
·      Robert the Bruce: "I Don't Want to Lose Heart!"
·      2 Chronicles 16:9 God sees our hearts and looks for those in whom there is nothing false. The barbarian hides nothing before God. The revolt is led by those who are not ashamed.

Untamed for People
·      The most insulting thing that Jesus said or did was to become the friend of sinners. (Luke 5:27-32)
·      Passionate heart for the world.
·      The civilized Christian does what is right out of fear; the radical does what is right out of love. The Christian civilization is held together by rules and rituals, the Revolt is fueled by the passion of God and guided by the mission of God.
·       If you choose to live your life in this way, if you make the insane decision to live your life for the sake of others, if you choose to follow the One whose call led Him to the brutality of the Cross, and if you embrace His invitation to take up your own cross and follow Him, then it has begun. If you dare allow God to unlock your spirit, He will unleash the raw and untamed faith within. Then you will know you have chosen the radical way out of civilization and into the fullness of the Kingdom of God!

CHALLENGE
·      Unite us… Robert the Bruce: Although the force of one person fully committed to God is tremendous, it pales in comparison to the force of God’s people moving together.

·      BEES swarms, ANTS colonies. WHALES pods. FISH schools. CATTLE herds. BIRDS flocks. LIONS pride. CROWS murders. TIGERS ambush. BUZZARDS committee. FLAMINGOS flamboyants. OWLS parliaments.

·      “Crashing Rhinos.”
·      We don’t have to pretend we know the future. Who cares that we can see only 30 feet ahead? Whatever’s at 31 feet needs to care that we’re coming and better get out of the way!
